NC State Faculty, Students Unearth Ancient Mythological Statues

A team of NC State faculty and students helped unearth more clues this summer about the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, Jordan. As part of a larger excavation at the site, the group discovered two marble statues of the mythological goddess Aphrodite — artifacts that dig co-director Tom Parker describes as “absolutely exquisite.”

Putting History to Work – Bringing the Field School Model to Crooked Tree, Belize

Public History professor, Alicia McGill, has been very busy this summer. After receiving an NCSU Facutly Research and Professional Development grant to pilot the first NC State international public history student research practicum, McGill and Public History students, Hannah Scruggs and Lisa Withers, set off to Belize to collect ethnographic and archival data in the village of Crooked Tree - a community rich in history and vibrant cultural heritage.

Rethinking Museum Accessibility

Public History grad student Jeanette Shaffer's plan to develop an audio guide script for visually impaired visitors to the Museum of Durham History leads to the creation of a museum task force with the goal of improving accessibility for audiences with different disabilities. Jeanette presented on her research and engagement with the museum at the Georgia State's Graduate Student History Conference in March.

Website Creates Digital Archive for HB2 Experiences

Citizens can share and document their experiences with North Carolina’s House Bill 2 through a new digital archive created by a North Carolina State University historian. The website, NC HB2: A Citizens’ History, allows users to submit stories, videos, images and documents related to the bill and sort through materials submitted by others.

Taking the Museum to the People

Public history graduate students Sarah Soleim and Abigail Jones have seen the challenge of attracting visitors to Raleigh's Pope House Museum firsthand. They worked at the house in the summer of 2015 during internships with the City of Raleigh Museum, the home’s current owner. As a way to increase public engagement, they worked with museum staff to brainstorm ways to bring the Pope House to the people.

Public History Graduate Students Attend the 2016 NCPH Annual Conference

In March, several graduate students in the Public History Program attended the 2016 Annual Meeting for the National Council on Public History in Baltimore, Maryland. The theme of the conference was “Challenging the Exclusive Past.” The conference’s sessions, panels, and workshops all revolved around discussions of what public historians can to do to expand and challenge local, state, national, and global narratives.
