Congratulations to our May 2017 Graduates!

We are proud to announce Eric Medlin and Douglas McCallum as our newest recipients of the Master of Arts degree in History and Jeanette Shaffer, Hannah Scruggs, Jason Norris, Katherine Bowers, Nicole Coscolluela, Derek Huss, Claire Kempa, and Ethan Ley as our newest recipients of the Master of Arts degree in Public History.

Alum brings Archaeology to her students at Leto High School

Pamela K. Xipolitas received her Master's degree from NC State's History program in May 2015. She moved to Florida and in June of the same year was hired at Leto High School where she is bringing Archaeology excavations to her 10th graders.

History Alum Wins CHASS Thesis Award

Many congratulations to alum, Sarah Billheimer, for winning this year’s CHASS Thesis Award. Billheimer joins a select group of History MAs in winning the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Thesis Award for "Champagne and Shakespeare: Bricktop and Sylvia Beach in Interwar Paris," which was completed under the direction of Professor Katherine Mellen Charron.

History Department Launches Texts & Talks Series

The History Department launched its new event series “Texts and Talks – Recent Faculty Books” this semester. First speaker Professor Nancy Mitchell presented her award-winning book, "Jimmy Carter and Africa: Race and the Cold War“ (Stanford University Press) and drew students, colleagues, and public visitors alike to D.H. Hill Library on April 22.

College Professor Brings History to Elementary School Children

History faculty regularly participate in Humanities Extension programs, often visiting public schools throughout North Carolina to talk on historical subjects. On 25 April, 2017, Professor Craig Friend visited Southwest Elementary School in Clemmons, NC. He talked to two fifth-grade classes, answering their questions about college life and talking about his current research on Lunsford Lane, a man born into slavery in Raleigh in 1803.

Professor S. Thomas Parker receives Outstanding Faculty Research Award.

The History Department is pleased to announce that Professor S. Thomas Parker has received the NCSU Alumni Association Outstanding Faculty Research Award. This award was given to twelve faculty members from across the university who were nominated by their respective colleges.

Mapping Early Syrian Immigrants in New York

Syrians have been immigrating to the United States since the 1880s. Using historical census data and open source mapping technology, NC State public history graduate students are researching the communities Syrians formed after landing in America.

Even the Ancients Appreciated Good Beer

Newly appointed Assistant Professor Tate Paulette, who specializes in Agricultural History and History of the Ancient Near East co-wrote a fascinating article on ancient beer and breweries in Mesopotamia for the blog "The Ancient Near East Today." Read it here.
