The teaching of history has been present since the earliest days of what became NC State University, but it was not until 1925 that it became institutionalized, combined with sociology as an academic department and ratified through the hire of historians, the addition of a history curriculum, and its own offices in Peele Hall. Twelve years later, history briefly became its own department, until it was again combined to form a new department with political science. Not until 1965 did history become its own department, located in Harrelson Hall. In the 2025-2026 academic year, we celebrate the centennial of history as a formal component of education at NC State and the diamond jubilee of the establishment of the modern Department of History, now housed in Withers Hall.
