NC State Faculty, Students Unearth Ancient Mythological Statues

A team of NC State faculty and students helped unearth more clues this summer about the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, Jordan. As part of a larger excavation at the site, the group discovered two marble statues of the mythological goddess Aphrodite — artifacts that dig co-director Tom Parker describes as “absolutely exquisite.”

Website Creates Digital Archive for HB2 Experiences

Citizens can share and document their experiences with North Carolina’s House Bill 2 through a new digital archive created by a North Carolina State University historian. The website, NC HB2: A Citizens’ History, allows users to submit stories, videos, images and documents related to the bill and sort through materials submitted by others.

Professor Bassett speaks on his book in India

Over spring break, Associate Professor Ross Bassett gave a series of talks in India on his book, The Technological Indian. The book describes how a group of Indians, starting in the late 19th century and continuing after India’s independence, looked to MIT as a vehicle for India’s technological development.

David Zonderman Named to Lead Department of History at NC State

Professor of History David A. Zonderman has been named head of the Department of History at NC State, effective immediately. Zonderman has been acting head since the untimely death of former head Jonathan Ocko in January 2015; he served as associate head from 2004 - 2015. Among his leadership roles within the college and across NC State, Zonderman was chair of the university’s faculty from 2013 – 2015 and served on the university’s budget restructuring task force from 2012 - 2015.

Professor Helps N.C. County Interpret Connection to Underground Railroad

NC State University historian David Zonderman has spent the past three years helping Halifax County interpret its deep connection to the Underground Railroad. After performing humanities extension work with the local school system for more than a decade, Zonderman engaged with the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau to develop a plan for conveying the county’s rich history to the public.
