CHASS Marks Golden Jubilee With Multimedia Timeline

2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. While the humanities and social sciences have been woven into the fabric of NC State University's history from its earliest days, our college was officially established as a unique entity in 1963. For our Golden Jubilee, we've assembled a multimedia timeline that reflects the college’s rich history, provides some insights about who we are, and maybe even hints at what the future might hold. Dean for a Day will be a Freaky Friday

Remember Freaky Friday, the movie where two people switch bodies--and lives--for 24 hours? On Friday, March 15, CHASS will host the college’s own role-swapping Friday: the annual Dean for a Day event. This year, Dean Jeff Braden will switch places with Andriy Shymonyak, a Park Scholar double major in History and Political Science.

Lincoln’s Legacy for Our Time

You've seen Lincoln, the movie. Now hear James McPherson, the Lincoln expert. The Civil War historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author will deliver a talk titled, “Lincoln’s Legacy for Our Time” as part of NC State’s History Weekend. (Saturday, Feb. 16, 10:00 - noon, in Room 232A of Withers Hall on the NC State campus.)

In the footsteps of Indiana Jones

History professor Tom Parker has served on archaeological expeditions in the Middle East for more than 30 years. Parker and his team spent the summer of 2012 on a new archaeological dig in Petra -- which happens to be the movie location for "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." Petra was recently voted one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

World’s French Bread Expert Keynotes “Feast and Famine” Conference

The college’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is hosting "Feast and Famine," an international, interdisciplinary conference about 19th century French studies. The world’s leading authority on the history of French bread is serving as keynote speaker. Steven Kaplan has been knighted twice in France for his devotion to the baguette. Kaplan, professor of European History at Cornell University, will give a free public talk while he's here, too.
