Meet Assistant Professor of History, Ryan Carty

The History Department is excited to welcome Assistant Professor of History, Ryan Carty. He will join the department in Fall 2025.

Ryan Carty is a historian of West Africa whose research engages with science and technology, animal studies, and the environment. His current research project investigates West African approaches to technology important for the development of the twentieth-century livestock trade. He works primarily with Muslim migrants in West Africa and has conducted oral histories and archival research in Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Senegal.

Carty also contributes to digital history projects. He builds web-based visualizations, runs text analysis, and analyzes geospatial data. Previously, he worked with Matrix: Center for Digital Humanities and Social Sciences and the Journal of West African History. He also led monitoring, evaluation, research, and learning projects in West Africa.

Carty will receive his PhD in History from Michigan State University in May 2025. He received a BA in Science, Technology, and Society from the University of Pennsylvania in 2013.
