The Historical Perspective – Not Just for History Students
Two NC State Science students recently made the news and we’d like to think they benefited from having a History Faculty member on their committees.
It’s not unusual for history faculty members to sit on committees for graduate students in other humanities disciplines and in science and engineering fields. These students value the historical perspective and context they receive from historians. And when these students go on to make significant achievements-the History Department celebrates it.
Associate professor Matthew Booker, who studies the boundaries of history, ecology, law and agriculture, serves on the committees of Megan Serr, doctoral student in Biological Sciences at NC State and Sophia Webster, doctoral student in Entomology.
In March, Serr published on the potential risks and rewards of genetic engineering for conservation in the Scientific American blog and she was quoted in a Yale 360 article from July 20.
Sophia Webster recently won an award in the Three Minute Thesis competition at Hunt Library. Her work on methods to reduce mosquito populations is featured in the summer 2017 issue of Think Magazine, the NCSU Graduate School magazine.
