Books, Publications and Papers

Freitag, S. “Acts of Seeing, Ways of Knowing: Visual Culture in the Making of Modern India.” Primus Books (February 2025). Dr. Freitag will launch the book at an event at UC Berkeley later this month, and will deliver a first book talk in Singapore in March.

Events & Lectures

• On February 3, for Black History Month, Dr. Ajamu Dillahunt-Holloway presented the lecture, “African Americans and Labor,” at the Carrboro Century Center.
• On February 5, Dr. William Kimler presented the lecture, “Eugenics before Genetics” at the Genetic Engineering and Society Center, NC State. Panopto and slides.

• On Feb. 6. Dr. Tate Paulette presented the lecture, “In the Land of Ninkasi: A History of Beer in Ancient Mesopotamia,” for students in the Honors Program, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL. On Feb 7, Dr. Paulette presented the same lecture at Proof Brewing Company, Tallahassee, FL.

• Dr. Nishani Frazier has organized NCSU Public History’s first symposium on Queer History featuring work about the impact of queer theories and research on heritage sites, oral histories, museums, and archives. The event will take place in Park Shops 200 on Feb 28. Details can be found here.

Notable Achievements

• Dr. Ajamu Dillahunt-Holloway has been selected as part of the inaugural cohort of Scholars for Social Justice’s Freedom and Justice Institute. This fellowship will support Dr. Dillahunt-Holloway’s scholarship on Black labor history in the south. 

• The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) received a generous gift to establish the Akram Khater Distinguished Professorship in Arab Migration Studies. It will support the work of a professor of any rank in Arab migration studies within the Department of History who will also serve in the college’s Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies, which is dedicated to researching Lebanese immigrants and sharing that knowledge with the scholarly community. Learn more.
