Presenting Research at the Southern Humanities Council Conference

At the end of January, I attended the Southern Humanities Council’s annual Conference located in Louisville, KY. I was fortunate to be accompanied by another history graduate student, Andrew Benton. The conference offered me my first experience presenting my paper entitled “Class and Conflict: Confederate Conscription Acts in Piedmont North Carolina.” This paper came from my thesis research and analyzed the impact that Confederate conscription acts had upon dissent within the Piedmont during the Civil War. The SHC offered a small conference atmosphere that welcomed first time conference goers. The conference attracts multiple disciplines that created a unique conference experience with a wide array of topics presented. Every attendee welcomed Andrew and myself to the conference. It was a valuable experience that prepared me to present my paper at a larger conference. I would recommend this conference to anyone that is looking to gain experience presenting his or her research. I am looking forward to attending this conference again in the future.
