History Department Welcomes New Post Doctoral Teaching Scholars

This fall, the History Department welcomes three new Post Doctoral Teaching Scholars:

Catherine Conner (African-American/Civil Rights History)

Dr. Conner is a UNC Chapel Hill Ph.D. who works on post-1963 Birmingham, Alabama, specifically how black political power and white economic power informed public policy and urban renewal. Her work sits at the intersection of African American history, urban history and the history of capitalism.

For Fall 2015, she will teach HI 372 (African American History  1619-1865) and HI 455/555 (History of the Civil Rights Movement).

Nicholas Blackwell (Ancient History)

Dr. Blackwell is completing a term as Assistant Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. He received his received his Ph.D. in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College in 2011. An archaeologist with field experience in Greece and Cyprus, his research focuses on metal tools, stone cutting, metallurgy, and interaction within and between the Aegean, Cypriot, Anatolian, and Levantine worlds during the Bronze Age.

For Fall 2015, he will teach HI 207 (Ancient Mediterranean World) and HI 400/500 (Civilizations of the Ancient Near East).

Golbarg Rekabtalaei (Middle Eastern History)

Dr. Rekabtalaei received her Ph.D. in Middle Eastern history from the University of Toronto. Her work focuses on modern Iran and cultural history. In particular, her dissertation looks at pre-1979 Iranian cinema as a revolutionary counterspace that laid the ground for the revolution. She will be teaching courses on the history of the Middle East, Modern Iran, and cinema in the Middle East.

For Fall 2015, she will teach HI 270 (Modern Middle East).
