A Modern View of the Medieval
Associate Professor Julie Mell, who teaches courses on medieval and Jewish history, teamed up with NCSU Libraries to give her students an immersive visualization experience they would not soon forget.
The Bayeux Tapestry–one of the greatest known works of the early medieval world–is a 224 foot long, 20 inch tall embroidered cloth that tells the story of William the Conqueror’s 1066 conquest of England. It is on permanent display at the Bayeux Museum in Normandy, France; however, Dr. Mell, in collaboration with the library staff, recreated the cloth using the Visualization Studio at D.H. Hill Library and the Teaching and Visualization Lab at James B. Hunt Jr. Library. With a 360 degree view of the cloth, NC State students were able to experience the grandeur of an essential piece of medieval history.
