Loren Michael Mortimer – CHASS Thesis Award

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences selected Loren Michael Mortimer’s “Pageants of Sovereignty: ‘Merciless Indian Savages’ and American Nation-State Formation on the Northern Borderlands, 1774-1775,” written under the direction of Professor Craig Friend, for the CHASS Thesis and Dissertation Award. Mike’s thesis explores the “concurrent revolutions in 1775” as both colonial and indigenous leaders sought to dismantle British authority. His story of the American Revolutions in the plural challenges us to reconceive this foundational period as one characterized by multi-national and multi-ethnic clashes.

Mike graduated with his M.A. in History in 2013. He is currently a Ph.D. student at UC – Davis.
