Biography 

Born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Marilyn is a second year PhD student in public history. She earned her undergraduate and masters degrees at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and remains an avid supporter of all things wolverine. Following graduation, she moved to Chicago, working and volunteering at several of the city’s cultural institutions. Marilyn has always been interested in the intersection between the built environment and history and is especially curious about the many ways in which heritage is leveraged for its social and economic potential. In addition to her coursework in public history, she is pursuing the City Design Certificate through the College of Design.


Teaching Interests

Historic preservation, cultural landscape studies, urban history, Great Lakes region, planning and environmental histories, material culture, food studies, tourism and leisure history, 20th century American history, urban planning

Projects

Currently taking on a new title as managing editor for Mashriq & Mahjar in her role as research assistant in the Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies. Marilyn is also involved in the formulation of her dissertation topic and its early stages of research. In addition to her NC State projects, she is participating in the ARCSU Fellowship Program, a preservation leadership training initiative spearheaded by the Preservation 50 Partnership.
