Social Studies Teacher Education Option (LTH)

The LTH option is in Social Studies Teacher Education, offered in collaboration with the College of Education. Graduates are eligible for North Carolina certification to teach Social Studies in secondary schools.

History majors may enroll in the teacher education program offered by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in cooperation with the College of Education. Students who complete this program are eligible for certification to teach social studies in secondary schools in North Carolina and most other states. Students are required to take professional courses in education and psychology and additional social science courses. Students desiring to enter this program would normally enter as LAH majors and be transferred to LTH in their sophomore year, but they will be assigned to one of the LTH advisors from the start and should contact that adviser early in their first semester on campus. Admission is competitive and the criteria include an overall grade point average of 2.50 or better. Enrollments may be limited in Teacher Education Option Programs.

The degree requires 30 hours of history course work, including the HI 300 and HI 491 seminars, plus 12 additional hours of social science coursed from a prescribed list and 25 hours of professional courses in Education and Psychology. The degree is completed with 120 hours and includes no free electives.
