Retired and Emeriti Professors

We take pride in our strong record of teaching. In the spring of 2000, the History Department was the first winner of the university's Departmental Award for Teaching and Learning Excellence, given annually to the department that has exhibited a commitment to sustained excellence in teaching and learning. Several members of the department have won teaching awards and other teaching honors.

  • Joe Hobbs and John Riddle are Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professors
  • Rich Slatta won the first Lonnie and Carol Poole Award for Excellence in Teaching for 1999-2000
  • Tom Parker was the Lonnie and Carol Poole Award for Excellence in Teaching for 2002-2003
  • Akram Khater was named University's Outstanding Faculty for Service/Extension in 2003
  • In 2002, John Riddle was the SHASS nominee for the UNC Board of Governors' Teaching Award. Professor Riddle also was awarded the Alexander Quarles Hollady Medal for Excellence, 2002, the university's highest award for career achievement.
