About Us

With a faculty of 35 full-time professors, the Department of History at NC State University takes great pride in its distinction as the 2000 recipient of the University's first Departmental Award for Teaching and Learning Excellence. The award is presented annually to the department that exhibits a sustained commitment to superior teaching and learning. Nearly half of the faculty has been elected as well to NCSU's Academy of Outstanding Teachers or won teaching awards. Two faculty, Professors Kimler and Vickery, have been further recognized as Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professors.

Members of the faculty have also received presitigious fellowships (such as the John Simon Guggenheim, Rockefeller, National Endowment for the Humanities, ACLS, American Philosophical Society, National Humanities Center, Fulbright Distinguished Professorship), grants (from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, the Luce Foundation, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation) and book and article prizes.

It has also distinguished itself in Outreach and Engagement as faculty have spoken to community groups and high schools across the state as well as worked with school systems and teacher groups to enhance curricula..
